Accessibility Statement

Last updated: March 2026

Our Commitment

The Narratologist (narratologist.io) is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards to guarantee we provide equal access to all of our users.

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

What We Have Done

We have taken the following measures to ensure the accessibility of The Narratologist:

  • Semantic HTML: The site uses proper semantic HTML5 elements — header, main, nav, article, section, and footer — to convey document structure and aid assistive technology navigation (WCAG 1.3.1 — Info and Relationships).
  • ARIA Landmarks: Key regions of each page are identified with ARIA landmarks such as role="banner", role="navigation", role="main", and descriptive aria-label attributes to enable efficient screen reader navigation.
  • Heading Hierarchy: A logical and sequential heading structure (H1–H6) is maintained across all pages (WCAG 2.4.6 — Headings and Labels).
  • Alt Text for Images: All images include descriptive alternative text to convey their content and function to users who cannot see them (WCAG 1.1.1 — Non-text Content).
  • Color Contrast: Text and background colors meet a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1, conforming to WCAG AA standards (WCAG 1.4.3 — Contrast (Minimum)).
  • Keyboard Navigation: All interactive elements are fully operable via keyboard alone using Tab, Enter, and Escape keys (WCAG 2.1.1 — Keyboard).
  • Skip to Content: A "Skip to main content" link is provided that becomes visible on keyboard focus, allowing users to bypass repetitive navigation (WCAG 2.4.1 — Bypass Blocks).
  • Focus Indicators: Clear, visible focus indicators are displayed when navigating via keyboard, ensuring users always know which element is active (WCAG 2.4.7 — Focus Visible).
  • Forms: All form fields include associated labels. Error and success messages are announced via aria-live regions for immediate feedback to assistive technologies (WCAG 3.3.1 — Error Identification, WCAG 4.1.3 — Status Messages).
  • Responsive Design: The site is fully responsive and adapts to all screen sizes — mobile, tablet, and desktop.
  • Text Resize: Text can be resized up to 200% using browser settings (Ctrl/Cmd + +) without loss of content or functionality (WCAG 1.4.4 — Resize Text).
  • Reduced Motion: The site respects the user's prefers-reduced-motion preference and reduces animations and transitions accordingly (WCAG 2.3.3 — Animation from Interactions).
  • Mobile Touch Targets: Touch targets are a minimum of 44×44 pixels. The interface supports standard gestures and does not rely on hover-only interactions (WCAG 2.5.5 — Target Size, WCAG 2.5.1 — Pointer Gestures).

Conformance Level

The Narratologist substantially conforms to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We conduct regular accessibility reviews and address any gaps as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving the accessibility of our site.

Technologies

The accessibility of The Narratologist relies on the following technologies:

  • Semantic HTML5
  • CSS with responsive layout
  • JavaScript (React / Next.js) with focus management and ARIA attributes

Supported Browsers

The site has been tested and is supported on the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It is also compatible with leading assistive technologies including screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver.

Known Limitations

  • Some article images sourced from external providers may have generic alternative text descriptions. We are actively working to improve these.

Third-Party Content

The site includes content embedded from external sources that are not under our full control:

  • YouTube Videos: Videos are embedded via the YouTube player. The accessibility of the player, including captions and audio descriptions, is determined by Google and the content creators. We aim to embed videos that include captions wherever possible.
  • Content Management System (Sanity Studio): The internal content editing interface is powered by Sanity Studio, a third-party system. The accessibility of that interface is determined by the vendor and is not publicly accessible to site visitors.

Continuous Improvement

We view accessibility as an ongoing process, not a one-time effort. As part of our commitment:

  • We conduct a comprehensive annual accessibility review and address its findings promptly.
  • All new content published on the site undergoes a baseline accessibility check before publication.
  • We monitor updates to accessibility standards (WCAG) and update the site accordingly.
  • Accessibility-related inquiries are reviewed and addressed with high priority.
